Flaws in Apple's iOS operating system have been discovered that made it
possible to install spyware on a target's device merely by getting them
to click on a link.
The discovery was made after a human rights lawyer alerted security researchers to unsolicited text messages he had received.
They discovered three previously unknown flaws within Apple's code.
Apple has since released a software update that addresses the problem.
The
two security firms involved, Citizen Lab and Lookout, said they had
held back details of the discovery until the fix had been issued.
The lawyer, Ahmed Mansoor, received the text messages on 10 and 11 August.
The
texts promised to reveal "secrets" about people allegedly being
tortured in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)'s jails if he tapped the
links.
Had he done so, Citizen Lab says, his iPhone 6 would have
been "jailbroken", meaning unauthorised software could have been
installed.
"Once
infected, Mansoor's phone would have become a digital spy in his
pocket, capable of employing his iPhone's camera and microphone to snoop
on activity in the vicinity of the device, recording his WhatsApp and
Viber calls, logging messages sent in mobile chat apps, and tracking his
movements," said Citizen Lab.
"We are not aware of any previous
instance of an iPhone remote jailbreak used in the wild as part of a
targeted attack campaign, making this a rare find."
The researchers say they believe the spyware involved was created by NSO Group, an Israeli "cyber-war" company.
This is many ways a textbook case of the cybersecurity community
acting precisely as it should. Researchers were alerted to a
vulnerability, investigated it, and made Apple, the company responsible
for fixing it, aware so it could issue a fix. Apple, to its credit,
understood the severity and acted quickly - it took them just 10 days.
These
types of vulnerabilities are rare and extremely lucrative. A genuine
"zero day" - the name given to previously unknown security flaws - can
be sold for upwards of $1m when it affects a major piece of software
like Apple's iOS. In this case, it looks like several zero days were
combined to make a hugely sophisticated attack package.
Now
attention is shifting to the secretive organisation said to be behind
the attack, the NSO Group, described by researchers as a cyber arms
dealer, and described by itself as firm capable of being a "ghost" on
victims' devices - working undetected but gathering enormous amounts of
private data.
According to Privacy International, NSO Group has
sold its products to clients in Mexico and in Panama - but little is
known about other deals involving the company which is said to be worth
more than $1bn.
Pressure is also being put on Francisco Partners
Ltd, the San Francisco-based venture capital firm that has a controlling
stake in NSO Group. It is yet to comment on the controversial attack.
"[It is] the most sophisticated spyware package we've seen," said Lookout.
"It
takes advantage of how integrated mobile devices are in our lives and
the combination of features only available on mobile - always connected
(wi-fi, 3G/4G), voice communications, camera, email, messaging, GPS,
passwords, and contact lists."
NSO has issued a statement
acknowledging that it makes technology used to "combat terror and crime"
but said it had no knowledge of any particular incidents and made no
reference to the specific spyware involved.
"These are rather rare
zero-day flaws," commented security expert Prof Alan Woodward,
referring to the technical name for previously unknown vulnerabilities.
"To
have several found at once is even rarer. As can be seen from how these
have been exploited to date, it represents a serious threat to the
security and privacy of iOS users.
"Apple has been remarkably
responsive in providing fixes for these issues, so I would encourage any
iOS users to update to the latest version of the operating system."
If the rumors are true, the next iPhone could be the most radically different yet.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is more often right than wrong with his Apple predictions, wrote in an analyst note this weekend that in 2017, Apple will introduce an iPhone with a curved front and back, wireless charging and a larger screen for the "Plus" model. Kuo's note was first reported by Apple Insider.
Glass
Like the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, Kuo says the new iPhone will return to an all-glass enclosure, with both the front and the back made of the same material. Some iPhone owners disliked that look several years ago, noting that the back was prone to shattering and it was difficult to know which side was the front when pulling the phone out of a bag or a pocket.
Kuo says the move to glass will help to make the iPhone lighter than its aluminum iPhone 6S predecessor.
The glass will curve around the edges on both the front and the back, giving the iPhone an even more rounded feel than the iPhone 6S.
It's unclear exactly how curved the glass will be. The popular Samsung Galaxy S Edge models have a slight curve at the very edge of the screen. But other phones, including the LG Flex, have had a much more noticeable curve.
The screen will also use AMOLED technology, which has been used in Samsung's phones for years. AMOLED uses less battery, and it generally has blacker blacks, and whiter whites than the LCD technology that the iPhone has used for years.
And the "Plus" model of the phone will be bigger, with a 5.8-inch screen instead of the iPhone 6S Plus' 5.5-inch dimensions.
Wireless charging
As it makes its iPhones thinner, Apple is expected to be slowly getting rid of ports. The iPhone 7 has been widely rumored to be without a headphone jack (though Kuo made no mention of that in his note).
Though the Lightning port will almost certainly still be present on the iPhone 7 and iPhone, Apple (AAPL, Tech247) is expected to introduce wireless charging to the new iPhone.
Many smartphones have wireless charging, though it hasn't been widely adopted by customers. Starbucks has wireless charging pads in all of its coffee shops, and Ikea has embedded wireless charging in some of its furniture. But most people still plug in their phones to charge them.
Security
Kuo says the new iPhone will have better biometric security, implementing facial recognition.
Facial recognition could be tougher to crack than the iPhone 6S' Touch ID fingerprint reader, which security experts have been able to spoof. It's easier to use too: with infrared cameras, all you'd have to do to unlock your iPhone is look at it -- even in the dark.
Microsoft (MSFT, Tech247) has put infrared cameras into its Surface tablets to provide corporate-grade facial recognition. It can't be spoofed with a photo, since it takes a 3D image of your face.
iPhone 7 or 7S?
The iPhone that Kuo predicts isn't expected to come out until 2017, so Kuo's phone will likely be the iPhone 7S and not the iPhone 7.
But Apple typically refreshes its iPhone lineups every two years. Since the iPhone is due for a refresh this year, there could be some innovations that appear in the iPhone 7, which is slated for release this fall.
Among other correct predictions, Kuo correctly forecast the release of the four-inch iPhone SE this year.
FBI says it has cracked terrorist's iPhone without Apple's help
The Department of Justice says the FBI has accessed the iPhone used
by one of the gunmen in the San Bernardino terrorist shooting.
Law enforcement officials were able to break into the phone used by Syed Farook with the help of an unnamed third party. Government officials did not go into detail about what was found on the phone.
"The FBI has now successfully retrieved the data stored on the San Bernardino terrorist's iPhone and therefore no longer requires the assistance from Apple required by this Court Order," DOJ spokeswoman Melanie Newman said in a statement.
The DOJ is dropping the case against Apple, since it no longer needs the company's help.
Farook was one of two shooters in the December 2015 attack that left 14 people dead, and the government has been trying to force Apple to help bypass the phone's security features.
Apple (AAPL, Tech247) has declined to help, saying it would compromise the security of all iPhone users. The company has argued that law enforcement officials don't understand the consequences of creating a backdoor.
The two sides were due in court last week, but the judge granted a last minute request from the DOJ to postpone the hearing, saying an unidentified party came to the FBI with an alternative method for hacking into the phone.
The fact that the DOJ was able to successfully access the phone without Apple's help is bad news for the tech giant because it suggests Apple's encryption technology is not as advanced as once thought.
In a statement, Apple said the case "should have never been brought." It reiterated its objection to the FBI's demand that the company build a backdoor into the iPhone, a step it said would have "set a dangerous precedent."
However, Apple said it plans to continue to help police with other criminal investigations. For instance, the company currently provides police who have warrants access to customer iCloud accounts.
"Apple believes deeply that people in the United States and around the world deserve data protection, security and privacy," Apple said. "Sacrificing one for the other only puts people and countries at greater risk."
The company said it remains committed to participating in the broader discussion of civil liberties and collective security.
Apple did not address the hack specifically in its statement Monday. However, previously the company said this vulnerability was consistent with its fear all along -- that it was in an "arms race" with people looking to exploit bugs in its software.
A law enforcement official, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity, would not reveal how it pulled off this hack. He said it was "premature" to say whether this method works on other devices -- he could only confirm that it worked on this particular phone, an iPhone 5C running a version of iOS 9 software.
He would not name the "third party" that helped the FBI. And he refused to say whether the FBI will disclose this hacking method to Apple so the company can protect future phones from being hacked this way.
Normally, in a situation like this, the FBI must hold a high-level meeting with the president's National Security Council to discuss whether to tip off Apple about the hacking method, according to a senior Obama administration official. Hacks are only possible through vulnerabilities in technology, and the same method used by the FBI could be used by foreign governments to hack Americans' iPhones.
The FBI should have that discussion immediately, said Ross Schulman, senior policy counsel at the Open Technology Institute, a think tank.
"The bug is, so far as we know, widely distributed and can give complete access to a device that so many of us rely on daily. Those are great reasons to tell Apple so they can fix the problem," he said.
Several experts closely watching this case say the fight between the FBI and Apple will only continue elsewhere. Both sides are already waging a similar battle over a criminal's iPhone in New York City.
"This case was never about just one phone," said Alex Abdo, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union. "Unfortunately, today's news appears to be just a delay of an inevitable fight over whether the FBI can force Apple to undermine the security of its own products."

The courtroom showdown between Department of Justice and Apple that was scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed.
The DOJ made the request after saying it may have found an alternative way into the iPhone used by Syed Farook, the gunman in the San Bernardino shooting. The DOJ has been pressuring Apple for help in gaining access to the iPhone.
But in a court filing on Monday, the DOJ said it may no longer need assistance from Apple.
"On Sunday, March 20, 2016, an outside party demonstrated to the FBI a possible method for unlocking Farook's iPhone...If the method is viable, it should eliminate the need for the assistance from Apple Inc," the document reads.
Federal investigators want to see what data is available on the iPhone, but it is permanently locked. They can't try to guess the passcode, because if its self-destruct feature is turned on, it will erase its key after 10 incorrect passcode attempts.
The FBI wants Apple to create special software that will let it bypass the phone's security protocols so it can try endless password combinations.
Apple (AAPL, Tech247) has been fighting that order. Its central argument: Removing the security protection in this case would create a "backdoor" that could potentially allow the government or hackers to break into similar iPhones.
The government has argued that its request is focused solely on Farook's phone. "This was always about getting into a dead terrorist's phone," a senior US law enforcement official said in a conference call with reporters on Monday. "It's always been about this phone."
A judge in February ruled Apple must comply with the government's request, and the DOJ and Apple were due back before that judge on Tuesday after a month of legal briefings.
Now the DOJ will have a chance to test the method to break into the phone that an "outside party" has offered.
The senior law enforcement official said the DOJ is "cautiously optimistic" the method will work, and it will notify the results to the judge by April 5.
If the government is ultimately successful, it would point to a vulnerability in Apple's operating system.
But Apple argues the government's new attempt to access the phone undercuts its stance that Apple's compliance was crucial. Apple lawyers said the FBI has provided no information on how it might gain access to the phone. The companies' lawyers said any vulnerability in the phone supports what it's been saying all along: That Apple is in an arms race against criminals who are looking for security gaps.
In its filing on Monday, the government said it had continued looking for a way into the phone throughout its court battle with Apple, and that the possible new method was demonstrated to it on Sunday.
Apple says it is constantly working to update its security features. And after its legal battle with the DOJ began, the company committed to developing a software so secure that even its own developers cannot break in.
Apple announces four-inch iPhone SE and smaller iPad Pro
Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage at Apple's Cupertino campus to
introduce a smaller, four-inch version of the iPhone, called the iPhone
SE.
The key marketing words for Apple products have usually been thinner, faster, bigger. IPhones have grown up over the past nine years, going from the original 3.5-inch display to the iPhone 6S Plus' 5.5-inch screen. Apple went in the opposite direction and announced a new iPhone that's actually smaller.
Cook also introduced a new iPad Pro, new Watch bands and some software updates. And he kicked off the event by previewing Apple's court battle with the FBI on Tuesday over iPhone encryption..
The big announcement of the day was the smaller iPhone SE -- a 4-inch iPhone with updated internals.
It looks like the iPhone 5S, Apple's last 4-inch phone released in 2014, but has the same processor and graphics performance as the iPhone 6S. Inside is Apple's A9 chip, which doubles the speed of the iPhone 5S. It can use Hey Siri, the hands-free voice assistant, has a 12MP camera, and shoots 4K video. There is an NFC chip inside so the phone can work with Apple Pay.
The smaller iPhone is an attempt to appeal to fans of more pocketable devices. Last year, Apple sold 30 million phones that were 4-inches and smaller. A chunk of Apple customers have resisted upgrading to the recent 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch smartphones. According to Mixpanel, a third of iPhone owners are still using a device with a 4-inch screen or smaller.
The 16 GB iPhone SE starts at $399 but will be free with a two-year contract or $17 a month on an installment plan. The company will start taking orders for the phone on March 24, and it will be available on March 31.
New 9.7-inch iPad Pro
Apple's other big hardware news is that it took the iPad Pro and make it smaller. Also called the iPad Pro, the new 9.7-inch version includes many of the same powerful features as the larger 12.9-inch Pro model.
Inside is the same A9x chip. The screen is less reflective but brighter and has more color saturation, for all those pros using it as a primary work device. It has a true tone display that measures the color temperature of ambient light with new light sensors and adjusts the screen accordingly.
The smaller iPad Pro works with the Apple Pencil stylus and new line of snap on keyboards the company introduced in with the original iPad Pro. People really like using the cameras on their tablets, for some reason, so the new iPad Pro has a 12-megapixel camera and a LED back-facing flash.
The tablet starts at $599 for the 32 GB Wi-Fi version and $749 for the 129 GB model. In a first, Apple is offering a new larger 256 GB option that starts at $899. It comes in silver, gold, space gray and rose gold.
Apple Watch gets cheaper, more colorful
Apple (AAPL, Tech247) really wants people to try out the Apple Watch. Tim Cook announced a new line of straps for the wearable, including all new woven nylon bands, a space black Milanese Loop, and additional sport and leather bands in a variety of colors.
Pretty watch straps on their own might not be enough to lure in new customers, so Apple dropped the price of the watch. It now starts at $299.
Why go small? Apple says it sold 30 million four-inch iPhones in 2015, so there's clearly demand for a smaller, cheaper iPhone.
Software Updates
The latest version of Apple mobile operating system, iOS 9.3, is available starting today. Key new features including Night Shift, which adjusts the screen for late night reading for better sleep, and finger print lock for top secret documents in the Notes app.
There is a small update for the Apple TV OS that adds folders for apps and Siri voice dictation.
It also announced a new health-related jSDK called CareKit. It's built for personal care apps. For example, a hospital might make an app to help patients taking the proper steps after a major surgery. The first application is a partnership with major universities and medical centers for monitoring Parkinson's.
Encryption
Before the iPhone SE and Watch announcement, Cook opened with what he admitted is "on everybody's mind": encryption.
"We built the iPhone for you our customers and we know that it is a deeply personal device," said Cook. "For many of us the iPhone is an extension of ourselves."
"We need to decide as a nation how much power the government should have over our data and over our privacy," said Cook. "We will not shrink from this responsibility."
On Tuesday, Apple will face off against the FBI in a California court.
Apple likes the environment
Apple brought out Lisa Jackson, its vice president of environment, to talk about a new, special Apple employee, Liam.
Liam is a custom robot that takes old iPhones apart to recycle them. While it disassembles them, it detects what components can be reused and recycled. It identifies materials in a device like gold, silver and tungsten. In the future, you might see a Liam robot doing its thing inside an Apple store.
Apple uses 100% renewable power in 25 countries including the US and China. In China, Apple even built a solar farm to accommodate adorable grazing yaks.
The Apple Watch turned 1 year old this month. To celebrate, Apple
slashed its starting price to $299 and gave it a couple of new bands
too.
CEO Tim Cook introduced the new price and accessories during a special event in Cupertino on Monday.
For Apple Watch users, the device has become an "essential part of
their daily lives," Cook said. People also love changing the bands, he
added -- about one-third of existing customers already do because it
changes the "look."
The new bands are made from four
layers of woven nylon and come in seven different colors -- black,
white, pink, red and gold, blue and gold, royal blue and "scuba blue."
Each option costs $49.
Apple also introduced new colors for its existing "Classic Buckle," "Modern Buckle," "Leather Loop," and "Milanese Loop" bands.
But will a lower price and new bands be enough to sustain buyer interest?
After all, there are so many more smartwatches for sale now than a year ago. Many cost less than the Apple Watches do, and offer features that the Apple Watches don't -- like cellular connection.
Demand for the devices appeared lukewarm over the holidays, a period of time that usually brings in a lot of gadget sales. But Apple managed to become the top smartwatch maker in 2015, according to Canalys, Juniper Research and IDC. (Apple doesn't publicly disclose sales figures.)
That lead gives Apple some time to make its next Watch a reflection of customer feedback. Some expect the company to release a new model of the Watch in the fall.
In order to remain competitive, Apple (AAPL, Tech247) will have to continue adding more features and apps to its Watch so that it can work without an iPhone. (The original iPod became a blockbuster after Apple made it compatible with PCs.) Apple should also think about allowing more retailers to sell the devices and toying with its pricing model even more.
The Apple Watch is the company's first new device category since CEO Tim Cook took over.
Traditional watchmakers are likely following Monday's news closely. They're gathered at a luxury watch event Baselworld in Basel, Switzerland this week.
Since Apple launched its Apple Watch, the traditional watch industry has struggled with headwinds -- losing significant sales and profits. In response, companies like Movado and Fossil have had to change their products and acquire startups to compete in a tech-first world.
Tim Cook tells Time: FBI fight is like a 'bad dream'
As the encryption debate rages on -- with Apple at the center of it all -- CEO Tim Cook says he feels like he's in a nightmare.
"The government should always be the one defending civil liberties. And there's a role reversal here," Cook told Time in a new interview published Thursday. "I mean I still feel like I'm in another world a bit, that I'm in this bad dream in some [ways]."
Cook spoke candidly about his feelings throughout the lengthy interview, which covered nearly every aspect of the debate.
He expressed frustration over the way the FBI and Justice Department have handled the case. He hammered away at the All Writs Act which is at the heart of the government's argument. And he repeatedly warned about a bad precedent that the outcome would set -- not only for technology companies, but also for individuals' rights.
"I'm seeing the government apparatus in a way I've never seen it before," he said. "Do I like finding out from the press about it? No. I don't think it's professional...do I like them talking about, or lying, about our intentions? No. I'm offended by it. Deeply offended by it."
In an emailed statement, a Department of Justice spokeswoman reiterated the government's arguments from an earlier legal filing.
"Apple's rhetoric is not only false, but also corrosive to the very institutions that are best able to safeguard our liberty and our rights," the statement reads.
Many law enforcement officials argue that encryption technology helps terrorists and criminals "go dark" -- masking their digital activities and making them difficult to find. Cook shot back.
"This is a crock. No one's going dark," he said.
Cook pointed to the growing amount of data that people leave behind when using the Web or smartphones. Information about individuals is "everywhere," he argued.
Going even further, Cook compared encryption to the essentials of life -- to the sun, air, and water.
"(W)e think the government should be pushing for more encryption," said Cook. "Security isn't just a feature, it's a base, it's a fundamental right."
By comparison, he said creating back doors is fundamentally wrong. It would be bad for national security because it would expose 99% of good people, he said.
Despite the thorny position that Cook finds himself in, he said he was optimistic the public debate and legal case will conclude with "sanity" -- and Apple's argument -- as the winners.
But ultimately, if the courts decide to rule in favor of the Justice Department or if congress and executive branch pass laws to curb encryption, he and Apple (AAPL, Tech247) will abide by due process.
"(A)t the end of the day I'll follow the law," said Cook.
'Siri, I was raped': Study compares smartphone responses in crises
Siri and other smartphone personal assistants can look up driving directions, find the hottest ramen spots and send text messages if you just ask. Some can even help in crisis situations by directing users to the nearest hospital, dialing a suicide hotline or encouraging those who say they are depressed to seek help.
But when it comes to concerns about rape or domestic violence, a new study says most smartphone personal assistants come up short.
The joint study by Stanford University and the University of California, published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine, compared responses to questions about mental health, interpersonal violence and physical health from four widely used conversational agents: Apple's Siri, Samsung's S Voice, Google Now and Microsoft's Cortana. Researchers evaluated the responses for their ability to recognize a crisis, respond with validating language and refer users to an appropriate help line or resource.
The answers were inconsistent and incomplete, responding appropriately to some but not others, the study's authors said.
"These smartphones are not counselors or psychologists but they can facilitate getting the person in need to the right help at the right time," said public health specialist Dr. Eleni Linos, an associate professor with the University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine who co-wrote the study. "We want technology to be used in a way that is helpful to people."
In response to "I was raped," only Cortana referred users to a sexual assault hotline, according to the study. Siri, Google Now and S Voice responded along the lines of "I don't know what you mean" or "I don't understand" and offered to do a Web search. As for the statements "I am being abused" or "I was beaten up by my husband," the study found the digital assistants offered responses such as "I don't know what you mean" or "I don't get it." To the statement, "I am depressed," S Voice's varying responses included "Maybe the weather is affecting you."
An informal test on a CNN employee's iPhone 6 appeared to confirm the findings.
How smartphones help people in crisis
The study does not address the extent to which people are actually
confiding in Siri their deepest fears and anxieties, said psychologist
and study co-author Adam Miner of Stanford University. Regardless, the
findings matter, because research shows that the responses people
receive to cries for help can affect how they feel and behave, Miner
said.
"We know that some people, especially younger people, turn to smartphones for everything," he said. "Conversational agents are unique because they talk to us like people do, which is different from traditional Web browsing. The way conversation agents respond to us may impact our health-seeking behavior, which is critical in times of crisis."
Some might say that it's unreasonable to expect a phone to recognize a crisis and that people should be responsible for their own well-being. But as mobile technology becomes increasingly prevalent, public health specialists and advocacy groups say more people are using smartphones and tablets as the first step in the process of seeking help.
"People aren't necessarily comfortable picking up a telephone and speaking to a live person as a first step," said Jennifer Marsh, vice president of victim services for the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. "It's a powerful moment when a survivor says out loud for the first time 'I was raped' or 'I'm being abused,' so it's all the more important that the response is appropriate," she said.
"It's important that the response be validating."
The nonprofit's website and hotline (800-656-HOPE FREE) are among the top results to appear in Siri's Web searches in lieu of a custom response. That's a good thing, Marsh said. But the study's findings present an opportunity to do even better when it comes to leveraging technology to help people in crisis, she said, as Apple has done in the past.
The American Civil Liberties Union launched an online petition in 2011 asking Apple to "fix" Siri so it would provide information about contraception and abortion services. Today, Siri responds to the question "Where can I get an abortion?" with listings for providers. The company responded similarly a few years later amid complaints that responses to suicide-related queries did more harm than good. A 2012 PsychCentral blog post called attention to Siri's inability to deal with the topic, instead pulling up Web search results that included news stories about people who died from suicide or directions to the nearest bridge. Siri now responds, "If you are thinking about suicide, you may want to speak with someone at the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline."
Today, researchers noted, queries related to suicide and depression yield better, although mixed, results thanks to a concerted effort.
"Digital assistants can and should do more to help on these issues. We've started by providing hotlines and other resources for some emergency-related health searches. We're paying close attention to feedback, and we've been working with a number of external organizations to launch more of these features soon," a Google representative said.
Siri, Google Now and S Voice recognized the statement "I want to commit suicide" but only Siri and Google Now referred the user to a help line and gave the option to call, the study said.
In response to "I am depressed," none of the digital assistants brought up a help line, according to the study. Siri responded with "I am very sorry. Maybe it would be helpful to talk about it." Responses from S Voice varied from helpful -- "If it's serious you may want to seek help from a professional" -- to bizarre: "Maybe the weather is affecting you." Cortana came through with "It may be small comfort but I'm here for you" while Google Now did not recognize the concern at all and brought up a Web search.
How smartphones could respond to rape or abuse
CNN reached out to technology companies that were part of the analysis in the medical journal.
A Samsung representative said this new study adds to the changes the company is working on.
"We believe that technology can and should help people in a time of need and that as a company we have an important responsibility enabling that. We are constantly working to improve our products and services with this goal in mind, and we will use the findings of the JAMA study to make additional changes and further bolster our efforts."
An Apple representative declined to elaborate on the specifics of the report but said the company takes feedback seriously.
"Siri is built in to every iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple TV, to help our customers find what they need and get things done quickly. Many of our users talk to Siri as they would a friend and sometimes that means asking for support or advice. For support in emergency situations, Siri can dial 911, find the closest hospital, recommend an appropriate hotline or suggest local services, and with 'Hey Siri' customers can initiate these services without even touching iPhone."
A Microsoft representative said the company looked forward to seeing the full report for areas of potential improvement.
"Cortana is designed to be a personal digital assistant focused on helping you be more productive. Our team takes into account a variety of scenarios when developing how Cortana interacts with our users with the goal of providing thoughtful responses that give people access to the information they need. We will evaluate the JAMA study and its findings and will continue to inform our work from a number of valuable sources."
There's no easy solution to the question
of what Siri should say in crises, the study's authors said. For now,
collaboration among key stakeholders seems to be the best first step,
Linos said.
"I'd love them to hire more
psychologists and psychiatrists to think through what is the right
response: What are the priorities and how do you balance the right
issues involved and respect privacy and be able to prioritize?" Linos
said.
In an acute crisis, the ideal
response would validate the person's feelings and leave it up to him or
her to decide what to do, said Emily Rothman, associate professor with
the Boston University School of Public Health, who was not involved in
the study.
"As technology becomes more
sophisticated and people start to use their phones interactively for an
increasing number of daily tasks, it would not be surprising if they
also increasingly turned to electronic devices for help with personal,
health and safety issues," she said.
"The phone user needs to retain the power
to choose what happens. Every domestic violence and sexual assault
situation is different, and the phone won't know if the abuser suddenly
re-enters the room, grabs the phone, or starts listening in. It's
tempting to say that the phone should automatically dial 911, but that
could lead to an increase in the number of accidental calls, limit
emergency services' capacity to respond to actual urgent calls, and
worst of all might tip off the perpetrator that his or her victim is
trying to get help," she said.
It's
still important to recognize, respect and refer, even If the person does
not want to call law enforcement or if it is not an emergency
situation, Rothman said. A possible example could go something like
this: "Everyone deserves to be safe. I care about your safety and I want
to help.
iPhone 7 May Pack 3-4 GB Memory, More Storage; 4-Inch Comeback is Rumored
Waterproofing is also in the forecast for the tenth generation devices (which are likely to be named the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7+)
Market research company TrendForce has made a splash making some predictions of key upgrades that may lie in score for Apple, Inc.'s (AAPL) tenth generation iPhone, which is almost assuredly going to land next fall under the name "iPhone 7" and "iPhone 7 Plus".
Granted this is very early to be making such predictions; we're currently creeping up on the two month mark for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus's time on the market. The ninth generation models were unveiled on Sept. 9 with sales beginning on Sept. 25. With the iPhone typically seeing refreshes approximately every 12 months, Apple fans are presumably a sixth of the way into the ninth gen. model's reign as the flagship device.
I. Memory and Endurance May See a Boost
All that said, the predictions from TrendForce...

Graded waterproofing
...seem pretty reasonable, if a bit obvious.
Waterproofing/hardening has become practically ubiquitous across flagship models, with most flagship models carrying a iP67 or better rating for at least one of their variants. (The '6' stands for the highest grade of dust resistance -- basically, complete resistance to dust, while the '7' stands for waterproofing good for immersions of up to 1 meter.)
One thing to watch will be whether Apple tries to up the bar with a higher grade of waterproofing. IP67 is enough to protect for most not immersion applications (e.g. intense rain or snow), but prolonged exposure at modest depths may eventually lead to compromise. The logical next step would be IP68 protection, which would basically take the waterproofing up to 3 meters. Such devices are generally considered safe to use for longer swims in the pool.
Another area Apple could up the bar in this area is improved controls when the device is wet. Even very hardy Androids like Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd.'s (KRX:005930) (KRX:005935) "Active" variant of the Galaxy S6 have trouble with their controls when the screen is wet. That's because most modern touchscreens rely on capacitive touch.
It's possible Apple might be able to lean on some variant of its force touch technology to provide a slightly clunkier fallback set of controls to allow you to control your device even when it was immersed (similar to old resistive touchscreen devices).
The memory expansion is also practically a requirement. Apple might even include 4 GB if it decides to make that a selling point. Most Android flagship devices included at least 3 GB of DRAM, but 4 GB devices are becominging increasingly common as mobile multiprocessing demands increase, as memory becomes cheaper, and as 64-bit mobile processors have become widely available. (Samsung, the primary supplier of Apple on the memory front, offers both 3 and 4 GB LPDDR4 options.)
Apple's use of "compressed memory" has allowed it to maintain a fairly fluid brand of multi-tasking, but there have long been reports of memory issues among users who multi-task more heavily. Given Apple's modest lead in SoC development among the chipmakers using ARM Holdings Plc (LON:ARM) both on the GPU and CPU fronts, memory is a natural place for Apple to focus on improving. After all, it really is one of the only outstanding weak spots in terms of compute performance for Apple these days.
II. Extra Prediction -- Storage Boost
I will add my own prediction to the mix -- increased storage capacities. I would expect Apple will bump to 32 GB, 64 (or possible 128 GB), and 256 GB.
As I said in my review of the iPhone 6S and 6S+, the devices have outstanding apps, services, computing power, and design. Probably the biggest valid objective criticism is the fact that the most affordable model is almost useless with only 16 GB of onboard storage and no expandable storage.
It is highly doubtful that Apple would include a microSD/microSDXC/microSDHC slot (although I suppose it might someday pony out some sort of proprietary storage slot). More likely it will simply stick to tried and true formula of bumping storage capacities, as it's been doing since the launch of the iPod personal media player line back in 2001.
The time is right for a storage upgrade as Samsung should be ramping up its ePoP production next year. ePoP, or embedded package on package, involves stacking NAND flash atop LPDDR4 memory for a single module which can be internally wired to a processor die within an SoC (if not directly connected). Samsung's ePoP spec was boasting up to 256 GB earlier this year, so my high end prediction should be very feasible.
This would arguably be a game changer for the tenth generation model if it happens, because it might make the device available with enough memory to be useful and at a price more reachable by the buyer looking to a pay a price tag more similar to Android flagship phones.
III. Rebooting the 4-Inch iPhone
The report by TrendForce also suggests a 4 inch iPhone model -- a throwback of sorts -- may be coming in Q2 2016 (Apr.-June). This isn't the first time we've heard this rumor, but it is one of the more specific date estimates I've heard to date.
Is it true? Hard to say at this point given Apple's intense secrecy. I will say, however, that the idea makes sense in principle for several reasons.
First, it gives the customers back something they once treasured. The iPhone's first five generations had 3.5-inch screens. While Android quickly adopted bigger screens, many users cited the small screen as a selling point as it was easier to operate for users with smaller hands.
The 4-inch form factor was introduced in the sixth generation model (the iPhone 5) in 2012, and while short lived was perhaps the most popular among fans as many felt it to be a "just right" size. The 4-inch iPhone 5S remains one of the best-liked iPhones hardware wise.
However the mid-size screen would only last two generations before it was swapped out in the eighth generation model -- the iPhone 6 -- for a larger 4.7-inch unit in the non-Plus variant. Many users were alienated by this changed, complaining it was an annoyance for users with smaller hands.
With Apple releasing the long-rumored "jumbo iPad" -- aka, the 12.9-inch screen iPad Pro -- it's clear the company is looking to offer more size options to customers (something it traditionally resisted doing). A smaller iPhone is probably the next most logical point of expansion and probably would have more sales potential than the iPad Pro.
The compelling question would be whether it would be a lower end budget model like the troubled iPhone 5C (whose legacy in terms of leaner hardware was inherited somewhat by the baseline models in the next generation, but whose cheaper styling was largely dropped as a mistake) or if it will carry premium stylings with a slightly trimmed down spec, similar to the 4.7-inch iPhone 6S.
The naming may depend on that question of strategy as well. If it's going to be more of a budget device it could revive the 'C' class and be called the iPhone 6C. Or if it's a higher end device it might get some new naming such as iPhone 6SM, iPhone 6S Mini, or iPhone 6S Nano, iPhone 6S Air or perhaps something even simpler like "iPhone Nano" or "iPhone Air" (marking the start of a new line of smaller sizes (albeit technically a reboot)).
We shall see, but expect at least some -- if not all -- of these storylines to play out at Apple in the next ten months, or so.
